Sydney - Australia declared war on feral cats on Thursday, with Environment Minister Greg Hunt saying two million of them will be killed to save threatened wildlife.

Launching the Threatened Species Strategy at a wildlife summit in Melbourne, Hunt said some $4.8m would be spent trying to eradicate cats from islands and areas of the mainland.

Hunt said feral cats have contributed to the extinction of 27 mammal species and threaten the survival of another 120 species such as numbats, bandicoots, betongs and the boobook owl.

Cats were introduced to the continent by settlers between the 17th and 19th centuries and there are now an estimated 30 million wild cats. Some grow to three times the size of household cats, and weigh up to 15kg.

Hunt said it was time to step in to save Australia's native animals from the predator humans had introduced.

"By 2020, I want to see two million feral cats culled, five new islands and 10 new mainland areas as safe havens, free of feral cats, and control measures applied across 10 million hectares."

Newly appointed Threatened Species Commissioner Gregory Andrews said the cull will use baiting and trapping, and asked cat owners to neuter their animals and not to let them outside to hunt.

"We don't hate cats. We just can't tolerate the damage that they're doing to our wildlife," Andrews said.

Others have suggested using native predators like dingoes and Tasmanian devils to take on the non-native cats.

Measures using poisons and trapping "can often be inefficient on a large scale, so what we should be probably doing instead rather is working with nature," Dr Euan Ritchie of Deakin University said.

☆Bull-running festival now became “Ball-running festival”.

☆Bull-running festival now became “Ball-running festival”.

Stop the Shinto ritual involving live frogs on skewers in Suwa Taisha shrine in Nagano.

Inuneko Kyusainowa opposes causing pain to creatures, even if it is a tradition or religious rite.

Looking at history and the world, the events which make animal sacrifices are changing, and now use substitutes.

As I reported in the example in Thailand, they substituted the doll of animation character Doraemon instead of using a live cat for the sacrifice in the festival of praying for rain.
In Spain, they substituted a big ball instead of a living bull for the Bull-running festival

Children can join with such festivals and events, not only adults.
It is necessary to change the form, with improvement of people’s awareness of animal treatment issues.

I protest the Shinto ritual involving live frogs on skewers in Suwa Taisha shrine, which is held every year on January 1st.

★Spanish village swaps bulls for giant polystyrene balls

Residents of a Madrid village have changed their annual running of the bulls to a similar event with giant 125-kilo (275 pounds) polystyrene balls, a move animal rights groups are hoping will be copied in other parts of Spain. Mataelpino, a small community of no more than 1,700 residents just outside the Spanish capital, is the first place in the country to hold a ‘running of the balls’.

Dubbed boloencierro, a made-up up term which combines the Spanish words for bowling ball and running of the bulls, the event sees participants being ‘chased’ down the sloping streets of Mataelpino by huge polystyrene balls rolling at great speed. Mataelpino has seen a rise in tourism numbers as a result and has also inspired animal rights group Peta to promote the swap around Spain.

“After bull runs the animals are tortured and killed in the bullring,” Peta president Mimi Bekhechi said. “People are also gored or trampled to death. Boloencierro is fun for all the family, and a great alternative for the growing number of people who oppose bullfighting and bull runs.” Peta is so impressed by the potential of ‘ball running’ that they’ve offered to pay the costs of holding the events to any town in Spain willing to ditch their traditional events with bulls.

Although Pamplona’s San Fermin bull runs are the most famous internationally, there are many towns and villages in Spain, Portugal and some parts of South America that have their own ‘encierros’. Some have no official age limit, and injuries and casualties are not uncommon. There is growing opposition within Spain to sports events and festivals involving bulls.

Please explore the information to your friends in overseas about abolition or use substitute for the Shinto ritual involving live frogs on skewers in Suwa Taisha shrine.

We Inuneko Kyusainowa and TNR Japan Animal Welfare hospital oppose the Shinto ritual involving live frogs on skewers in Suwa Taisha shrine in Nagano prefecture.

We continue to demand that Suwa Taisha shrine use a substitute, rather than using a live frog for this cruel Shinto ritual.

■You should stop cruelties to any creature

■Cruelty of adults is virtually handed down to children via live frogs on skewers

■Stop the skewering of live frogs! Request a substitute,

■The Japanese should open their hearts and love small life.

Every year on January 1st, Suwa Taisha shrine holds a Shinto ritual to dig up the torpid frogs and kills them by impaling them on skewers.
What kind of meaning will this useless torture-killing have in the present times?

“Kawazugari Shinji” is a traditional shinto ritual at Suwa Taisha Shrine.
They skewer a live frog with a tree branch.
We want to let stop the infliction of pain and suffering on the animal.
Please call Suwa Taisha shrine, and tell them to use a substitute instead of a living frog.

☆In Thailand uses cartoon character “Doraemon”, instead of a living cat, for the rain‐making rituals.

http://news.livedoor.com/article/detail/10290536/

Thailand’s “Bangkok Post” newspaper reported on the traditional rain-making ritual “Hae Nang Maew”, held in Phrae prefecture.
They used to use a cat in a cage, parading while singing and dancing, and throw water over the cat while praying for rain.
When it was judged to be animal abuse, and illegal, they began using a cartoon character, a “Doraemon”’ doll.

About Us

Message from Akiko Yui, President and Founder of TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital
I believe that helping animals in need, existing in symbiosis with animals, and fostering a loving heart lead to an improvement in one’s character of kindness and generosity. The killing of animals due to decisions made by administration goes against my firm belief in preventing cruelty to animals. Animal Rescue Fund’s most important goal is to reduce the number of animals killed in Japan to zero by urging administration to change, reform, and improve the prevention of cruelty to animals. In order to reduce the number of animals in need, we work to raise awareness and support for the importance of sterilization operations. Each year, we spay and neuter more than 1000 stray cats. We are always putting animals up for adoption to help those lives already born in finding a loving home.

TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital:
We first opened our TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital in February of 2011 in an effort to make our dream a reality - to lower the number of dogs and cats killed in Japan to zero. At our hospital, we spay and neuter cats to reduce the number of unfortunate stray cats. Our hospital strives to help unfortunate animals in need of medical care.
The lives of numerous pets and livestock were lost as a result of the unprecedented earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan on March 11th 2011 and the radiation disaster caused by the stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Animal Rescue Fund goes directly to the 20km evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant to rescue animals.
Animal Rescue Fund is based in Kanagawa Prefecture’s TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital. Therefore, the animals that we rescue from Fukushima Prefecture are brought to TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital located in Kanagawa Prefecture. Here, the rescued animals receive medical care and are returned to their owners or are put up for adoption.
We also work in urging the government and administration of Japan to support the protection of animals in need.
