Animal Rescue 311 TOHOKU

September 14th, 2011

I didn’t think that I would make such desperate efforts towards rescue activities after the terrible disaster on March 11th, 2011.

I feel hopeless about our country which is not helping but abandoning the lives in the stricken area. This is very sad, but on the other hand, so many people are supporting us. This gives me so much courage and this is why I can go on. I deeply appreciate all of you who are thinking of us and supporting us.

“Monkey Style” by Monkey Siota is one of our supporters. He designs very nice T-shirts and donates its proceeds to TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital for the suffering animals. My apologies for not expressing gratitude to him till now. I can imagine all of your warm hands and smiles through his support. Thank you so much for giving me such beautiful gift.

Before it is too late.

On September 14th, we will accept many more dogs and cats from Fukushima. Our renewal shelter can accept now 50 dogs and cats but it will be easily filled.

I am thinking of having a bigger shelter but it is not so easy to find the space in a large city. I am doing what I can do bit by bit. The adoption event is one of example. I thank so much those of you who are helping to diffuse the information. Please visit our adoption event. I would appreciate it if you could concern to accept your new family. We are also looking for the temporary host families. It will help us a lot to save our shelter space.

Please contact us about the adoption event or becoming a temporary host family.

A petition to rescue pets left behind in the warning area of Fukushima

September 12th, 2011
A petition to rescue pets left behind in the warning area of Fukushima

1. The purpose
When the Fukushima nuclear plant accident happened, residents were told that they could come home in a few days. The government told them to leave pets with some food and water. However they still cannot go home and are forbidden from entering the 20km zone. The owners and the private animal rescue parties cannot go in to give them food and water. Many dogs and cats were starved to death. The house cats have been feeding on one another and on dead animals. The surviving dogs are still roving to find food and their owners but have become very weak.

Currently the staff of Fukushima prefecture are trying to rescue them but they can rescue only one at time. There are thousands of animals waiting to be rescued. The suffering of the owners who could not take their pets is very real. We have received so many comments of anxiety and anger from abroad. As Japan is one the group of developed nations, we have to save the small lives which are lost day by day. We want to beg you to urgent action under the law of the protection and administration of animals.

2. The petition articles
- Permission for the owner or a deputy to go in to the warning area to rescue their pets.
- Permission for the owner or a deputy to go in to the warning area to feed the animals.
- Permission for the private animal rescue party to pick up stray animals.
- General support for the above 3 articles.

TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital petitioned as above to the House of Representatives through the member of Democratic Party, Mr.Yukio Ubukata. Mr.Ubukata is the secretary-general of the “Diet members caucus to forbid the culling of dogs and cats”. Recently he took up his post as chairman of the environment committee.

This petition was considered on August 25th at environment committee. However the result was “put on hold”. It means that nothing will happen. I have heard that other parties also petitioned but I imagine the result is the same.

Still now, so many animals are awaiting our rescue in the warning area in Fukushima. We have been arguing that it is totally inadequate to employ only the staff of the prefecture. Fukushima prefecture also needs our help.

We have to appeal more and more to get the permission for private animal rescue parties to go into the warning area and carry out rescue activities. This is the most urgent business.

Please check out Mr.Ubukata’s blog and send him an email to concentrate on the animal rescue in the warning area.

About Us

Message from Akiko Yui, President and Founder of TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital
I believe that helping animals in need, existing in symbiosis with animals, and fostering a loving heart lead to an improvement in one’s character of kindness and generosity. The killing of animals due to decisions made by administration goes against my firm belief in preventing cruelty to animals. Animal Rescue Fund’s most important goal is to reduce the number of animals killed in Japan to zero by urging administration to change, reform, and improve the prevention of cruelty to animals. In order to reduce the number of animals in need, we work to raise awareness and support for the importance of sterilization operations. Each year, we spay and neuter more than 1000 stray cats. We are always putting animals up for adoption to help those lives already born in finding a loving home.

TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital:
We first opened our TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital in February of 2011 in an effort to make our dream a reality - to lower the number of dogs and cats killed in Japan to zero. At our hospital, we spay and neuter cats to reduce the number of unfortunate stray cats. Our hospital strives to help unfortunate animals in need of medical care.
The lives of numerous pets and livestock were lost as a result of the unprecedented earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan on March 11th 2011 and the radiation disaster caused by the stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Animal Rescue Fund goes directly to the 20km evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant to rescue animals.
Animal Rescue Fund is based in Kanagawa Prefecture’s TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital. Therefore, the animals that we rescue from Fukushima Prefecture are brought to TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital located in Kanagawa Prefecture. Here, the rescued animals receive medical care and are returned to their owners or are put up for adoption.
We also work in urging the government and administration of Japan to support the protection of animals in need.
