Feeding activity in off-limits area, Fukushima

November 25th, 2012

Sincere thanks to you for sending us so much food.

Today's work begins with capture activity in 7 places in Ohkuma-machi, and then 1 in Futaba-machi. We also leave food and water, and set the Styrofoam bed.

We put a donated blanket inside of Styrofoam bed.

Various wild animals are coming and going from this place. We set the beds on higher places, like a shelf.

In Futaba-machi, I had a chance to talk to one owner who was visiting home temporarily. They have 3 cats, but I found only 1. I still can’t find the remaining 2 cats. Since they saw these 2 cats last October, we haven't been able to find or capture them. The owner was crying so hard, and asking "Why don't the authorities help to enable private rescue parties, and why don't they think about the residents?" It is so cruel.

I continue to appeal to the Diet member.

Naraha-machi is the gateway to the off-limits area. We are thinking about setting the big storage facility here.

The food box is sometimes destroyed, maybe by raccoon dogs or wild boar. So this time, I brought heavy concrete. Recently the cattle don’t come, (actually most of them are dead.). So we can do something with concrete blocks to deal with raccoon dogs.

Time goes so fast. It is time to collect the capture cage. We captured 5 cats. But one kitten, who looks to be just about 7 months, seems to be lactating. So I released it. Even in such terrible situation, life begins and ends.

Ministry of the Environment will do capture activity from December 3 to 27. The rescue party has to be careful, because such parties may have caused trouble as a result of feeding. The Ministry of the Environment doesn’t leave food and water. They won’t tax their brain over such things. If I can go to the off-limits area, I can capture 100 or 200 cats just by myself. Due to the hesitancy of the government, breeding continues unabated. Life, though sacred, suffers vainly, and is lost. Life born to calamity. I feel strong anger because I can't even do TNR activity.
This is a desperate effort to save 4 lives. Please don’t go mew. Soon we'll go through the checkpoint. Please don’t go mew. One police car is after us. We can’t stop the car here.

The police have plenty of important work to do. How much time and how many people they are using to arrest animal rescue workers. The police shouldn’t be used like this. This is a real problem for the animals. The Ministry of Environment should make and realize reliable guidelines.

About Us

Message from Akiko Yui, President and Founder of TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital
I believe that helping animals in need, existing in symbiosis with animals, and fostering a loving heart lead to an improvement in one’s character of kindness and generosity. The killing of animals due to decisions made by administration goes against my firm belief in preventing cruelty to animals. Animal Rescue Fund’s most important goal is to reduce the number of animals killed in Japan to zero by urging administration to change, reform, and improve the prevention of cruelty to animals. In order to reduce the number of animals in need, we work to raise awareness and support for the importance of sterilization operations. Each year, we spay and neuter more than 1000 stray cats. We are always putting animals up for adoption to help those lives already born in finding a loving home.

TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital:
We first opened our TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital in February of 2011 in an effort to make our dream a reality - to lower the number of dogs and cats killed in Japan to zero. At our hospital, we spay and neuter cats to reduce the number of unfortunate stray cats. Our hospital strives to help unfortunate animals in need of medical care.
The lives of numerous pets and livestock were lost as a result of the unprecedented earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan on March 11th 2011 and the radiation disaster caused by the stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Animal Rescue Fund goes directly to the 20km evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant to rescue animals.
Animal Rescue Fund is based in Kanagawa Prefecture’s TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital. Therefore, the animals that we rescue from Fukushima Prefecture are brought to TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital located in Kanagawa Prefecture. Here, the rescued animals receive medical care and are returned to their owners or are put up for adoption.
We also work in urging the government and administration of Japan to support the protection of animals in need.
