Fukushima, extermination of life

Do you know why I put the cover around the capture cage when I protect the cat?

It's because I had really painful experience.
I set a capture cage to protect a cat.
But one day, a rat was in it.
The rat can put his face through part of the grid of the cage, and tried to get out from.
But the body couldn't go through the grid, and then it died in misery.

In Fukushima, I have to go to a several places, and I leave the cages for a few hours.
When I got back to collect the cage, I saw a rat that had died with his face stuck in the grid.
How this rat suffered terribly.
I was going to protect the cat, but killed a rat.

Occasionally rats had come into the cage before, but I did nothing for them.
Then rats die.I am confused, because I don’t know what I am doing.

It is too late, but this cover is to protect the rat’s life, so as not to get stuck between the grids.
This is also to avoid the cold for the cat.
I have to be gentle for any life.

But again!
Whenever I see any life in Fukushima, I have to think it will be killed.

The damage of the rat spreads.
Extermination begins in mid-October in the Fukushima evacuation zone.
(From Fukushima Kenmin News, October 5, 2013)

In the Fukushima evacuation zone, which was so designated due to the accident at Tokyo Electric Power's Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, rats are going into houses, and this damage spreads.
Fukushima prefecture started the extermination of rats in Naraha and Namie from mid-October, and will continue to the end of November.
The temperature is getting lower, and this is why the rats go indoors.
The extermination will be effectively carried out.
It was announced at Fukushima prefecture assembly public Safety Commission on October 4.
This is the explanation of assemblyman Eiji Sakamoto (the democratic party of Japan in Fukushima, Futaba).
Before the extermination, Fukushima prefecture investigated the actual situation of the rats; population, type, and the food in Minami soma-Odaka, Tomioka, Namie and Naraha.
They are making a manual for addressing the rat issue.
The result of this investigation will be added into this manual by the end of the year.
Explaining the increase of rats in the evacuation area, Fukushima prefecture introduced an expert’s opinion.
It was said that because the residents could bring only limited food for abandoned animals.
The remaining domestic animals die, leaving plenty of food for the rats.
He also said that the rats increased until last year, but as food is decreasing now, the peak has passed.

I am worried about the influence of their methods on other creatures...

About Us

Message from Akiko Yui, President and Founder of TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital
I believe that helping animals in need, existing in symbiosis with animals, and fostering a loving heart lead to an improvement in one’s character of kindness and generosity. The killing of animals due to decisions made by administration goes against my firm belief in preventing cruelty to animals. Animal Rescue Fund’s most important goal is to reduce the number of animals killed in Japan to zero by urging administration to change, reform, and improve the prevention of cruelty to animals. In order to reduce the number of animals in need, we work to raise awareness and support for the importance of sterilization operations. Each year, we spay and neuter more than 1000 stray cats. We are always putting animals up for adoption to help those lives already born in finding a loving home.

TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital:
We first opened our TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital in February of 2011 in an effort to make our dream a reality - to lower the number of dogs and cats killed in Japan to zero. At our hospital, we spay and neuter cats to reduce the number of unfortunate stray cats. Our hospital strives to help unfortunate animals in need of medical care.
The lives of numerous pets and livestock were lost as a result of the unprecedented earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan on March 11th 2011 and the radiation disaster caused by the stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Animal Rescue Fund goes directly to the 20km evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant to rescue animals.
Animal Rescue Fund is based in Kanagawa Prefecture’s TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital. Therefore, the animals that we rescue from Fukushima Prefecture are brought to TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital located in Kanagawa Prefecture. Here, the rescued animals receive medical care and are returned to their owners or are put up for adoption.
We also work in urging the government and administration of Japan to support the protection of animals in need.
