To save the disaster-area pets, Rescue Japanese Animal Victims (RJAV) opened a shelter in Koriyama.

I, Akiko Yui, am a delegate of TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital and also a member of NPO Yokohama Animal Family in Yokohama-city. For this rescue activity in Fukushima, we decided to cooperate together. We are busy with our own activity and can’t make contact so often. However, for such an emergency matter, our cooperative efforts are steadfast, hand in hand.

For example, in the past, I cooperated with Mrs. Masako Nonaka, who is the chairman of the board of directors of Yokohama Animal Family, and worked to help stop the beating to death of "tanuki", or "raccoon-dogs", in Shimane prefecture.

Chairman Nonaka is in the hospital, and not well. She felt sorry that she can’t join in the activity, but said she will take all responsibility, and let us work together. At this point a private rescue party can't apply to come into the off-limits area, only a corporate party can apply. Unfortunately TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital is not corporate party. But we can’t miss this chance. I was left in high command, and manage the shelter entirely. I decided to go and do some rescuing as a member of Yokohama Animal Family.

The application was complicated and it took whole day. But we managed to get the permission. From December 21 to 27, I was doing rescue activity, even on Christmas day, and my birthday. I will report on it later.

By request of the owner, we set the capture cage in their house. But as we suspected, other cats came in one after another. We rescued cats from terrible conditions.

We have been hoping, waiting, to go into the off-limits area legally. So this time we don’t leave any pets, even without requests from owners. Maybe later we can find the owners.

So it is important to have a shelter near Fukushima. The pet hotel is giving us a good price, but we can’t do this for a long time. We have been discussing this with RJAV, and they found a place in Koriyama. After the health check (vaccine injection, sterilization, destruction of worms), we start to transfer the cats to Koriyama on December 30th.

Rescue Japanese Animal Victims (RJAV) (in Japanese)

The shelter is not so far from Tamagawa-mura, 2 stories and strong. The site is also big enough for the parking and also for sunbath and running.

I hope they get relief soon, and go back to their families, or find a host family.

They are found in Tomioka-machi, Futaba-gun, at the owner’s request, but they don't belong to this owner. They look similar, maybe brothers? Always close together. We urgently make a list of rescued pets.

The animal shelter in Koriyama has to start from nothing. We need volunteers, and your donations. We urgently need cat cages. These cages are used in Nyanda Guard and it looks comfortable for cats.

If you have a cage which you don’t use anymore, we would appreciate if you could donate it for the Koriyama shelter. Thank you so much for your support.
Please have a look the web site of RJAV to see where to send things.

TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital is also receiving many cats. The doctors, staff, and volunteers are working day and night. It has become difficult to maintain the hectic pace.

About Us

Message from Akiko Yui, President and Founder of TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital
I believe that helping animals in need, existing in symbiosis with animals, and fostering a loving heart lead to an improvement in one’s character of kindness and generosity. The killing of animals due to decisions made by administration goes against my firm belief in preventing cruelty to animals. Animal Rescue Fund’s most important goal is to reduce the number of animals killed in Japan to zero by urging administration to change, reform, and improve the prevention of cruelty to animals. In order to reduce the number of animals in need, we work to raise awareness and support for the importance of sterilization operations. Each year, we spay and neuter more than 1000 stray cats. We are always putting animals up for adoption to help those lives already born in finding a loving home.

TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital:
We first opened our TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital in February of 2011 in an effort to make our dream a reality - to lower the number of dogs and cats killed in Japan to zero. At our hospital, we spay and neuter cats to reduce the number of unfortunate stray cats. Our hospital strives to help unfortunate animals in need of medical care.
The lives of numerous pets and livestock were lost as a result of the unprecedented earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan on March 11th 2011 and the radiation disaster caused by the stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Animal Rescue Fund goes directly to the 20km evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant to rescue animals.
Animal Rescue Fund is based in Kanagawa Prefecture’s TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital. Therefore, the animals that we rescue from Fukushima Prefecture are brought to TNR Japan Animal Welfare Hospital located in Kanagawa Prefecture. Here, the rescued animals receive medical care and are returned to their owners or are put up for adoption.
We also work in urging the government and administration of Japan to support the protection of animals in need.
